Our structural and non-structural arches

02/05/2025 • Category

Despite many designs dating back to ancient times, arches continue to be a popular choice in contemporary construction. We manufacture and supply both segmental brick arches and flat arches across a range of specifications, including structural and non-structural arches.

What’s the difference between structural and non-structural arches?

A structural brick arch is used to take a load, distributing weight along the arch. Non-structural arches, on the other hand, should be used in conjunction with a load-bearing lintel.

Structural arches involve brick slips bonded to either concrete or steel elements. The arch created also acts as a structural support and enables the brick slip to return around the arch base, providing a brick reveal.

Non-structural arches see the bricks bonded to a lightweight composite panel. Our non-structural arches are bonded to a Composite SIP panel, independently tested by Lucideon, a global leader in construction-based testing. These must be used with a structural lintel. This choice offers a lighter weight and easy to construct solution. However, given the arch sits on the lintel, brick reveals are not possible.

Whether opting for structural or non-structural, pre-fabricated brick arches are a popular choice as they remove the need for additional brickwork on site, increasing efficiency. This makes them a straightforward and flexible way to improve the aesthetics of a building.

If on the other hand you're looking to handset your arches in either flat gauge and segmental, AAB can cut the bricks to shape, ready for hand setting. Take a closer look at our brick selector or get in touch with our team to chat through your options.

What types of pre-fabricated arches are available?

We manufacture pre-fabricated Segmental Arches featuring a soldier voussoir, this is sometimes called a soldier arch. These bricks form an arch shape when assembled, in one or two courses. This design is available in two heights, 290mm and 365mm. Supplied with an opening dimension to suit your requirements, exact specifications can be discussed further with our team.

Our pre-fabricated Flat Gauge Arch is undoubtedly our most popular brick arch product. This is available in three heights, with or without key detail, and with or without rise. It ranges from 215mm to 365mm. Again it is available in any opening dimension. This product has a brick and bat pattern sitting between three and five courses high.

Supplied fully bonded and fitted in place, our brick arches are delivered unpointed. This allows you to colour-match pointing during installation. Longer arches are often supplied in multiple sections.
